But with so many to choose from, deciding which one is right for you isn’t easy. That’s why we’ve produced a simple checklist of things you should consider to help you make the decision that’s right for you:
The right accommodation
- Is it convenient for relatives and friends to visit?
- Do they offer a choice of single and companion rooms?
- Do rooms have en-suite or nearby toilet and hand basin?
- Are residents encouraged to bring their own possessions?
- Is there easy access to all floors, wide corridors and doors
for wheelchairs? - Is the home clean and odour free?
The right facilities
- Are there a variety of communal areas: lounges, quiet rooms, dining room(s), outside sitting areas?
- Is there a regular activities programme?
- Does the daily menu offer a choice of options?
- Can you view the gardens and outlooks from the lounges and bedrooms?
- Is the laundry service included in the weekly fee?
- Are there televisions and radios installed in bedrooms?
- Are suitable pets welcomed?
The right atmosphere
- Does the brochure accurately reflect the home?
- Did you get a warm, friendly welcome?
- Is there a visible staff presence?
- Is there a confident, reassurring manager?
- Is there good interaction between staff and residents?
- Is there evidence of positive feedback from resident and their families?
The right equipment - does the home have the following:
- Hoists
- Walking aids
- Wheelchairs
- Special mattresses
- Pressure cushions
- Handrails
- Furniture suitable for older people
The right policies and procedures:
- Is there a written contract between the home and the resident?
- Is there a clear statement of what's included in the fee and what are extras?
- Are the resident rights clearly documented?
- Is there a clear philosophy of care?
- Are there detailed quality checks?
- Is there an active residents' group?
- Is there an active relatives' group?
